Today's reading: Num. 7; Ps. 23; Acts 27
Have you ever been seasick? Did you ever not see the light of the sun or stars for many days? Were you ever in a boat with 276 other passengers who felt like your same cranky, uncomfortable self?
In Acts 27 Paul was on his way to Rome to stand trial. He knew he was in God's will, but it sure looked like all was against him - especially nature. For two weeks they were tossed about by the whim of the storm. They had no idea where they were and eventually "gave up all hope of being saved."
Paul, however, was able to give encouragement during that time and to show his reliance on the Holy Spirit, whom Jesus called the Comforter. To experience comfort you need to be uncomfortable. Isn’t that when we’re closest to Him, during our hardest times when we are on our knees seeking comfort from Him? If comfort is our goal we will get it. But if loving God and loving our neighbors as ourselves is our goal then, let’s face it, we won’t always be comfortable.
Together let’s follow Paul’s example of relying on the Comforter in all things, every day, whether we experience the challenge of just a few rain drops or the pounding of a “northeaster.”
Jesus, thank you for sending us the Comforter, your Holy Spirit, to guide us and give us peace. Help us rely on him daily especially in any uncomfortable situations we may find ourselves in, that we might grow stronger in Your character and be at peace during life’s storms. Amen.
